Strawberry Picking Tips

1. Try to pick your berries with the long green stem (the peduncle) attached. Do this by grasping the peduncle between the forefinger and the thumbnail and pull with a slight twisting motion. Keeping the calyx (the tiny green leaves) attached keeps your strawberries fresher longer.

2. Select red strawberries. Green berries will not ripen after they are picked.

3. Gently place the berries in your shallow basket or container to avoid bruising them.

4. Store your strawberries, unwashed, with their stems on in a shallow, loosely covered container in your fridge.

5. Wash the berries just before you are are ready to use them. Remove the stems after washing them, so the water doesn't enter the berry and dilute the flavour.  Washing ahead of time makes them more prone to spoiling.
